ブラッシア属は、南アメリカの熱帯地域に３０種ほどが分布しています。高山の樹上に着生して、初夏から夏にかけて淡い緑色の花を咲かせます。赤褐色と白色の斑があります。英名は、花弁のかたちが「クモ（蜘蛛）」を思わせることから。属名は、イギリスの植物学者のウィリアム・ブラス（William Brass）に因みます。

The Spider orchid (Brassia sp.) belongs to Orchdaceae (the Orchid family). The genus Brassia has about 30 species distributed in tropical South America. It grows on alpine trees and produces pale green flowers from early summer to mid summer. They have reddish-brown and white patches. The English name is derived from the shape of the petals, which remind one of a spider. The genus is named after the English botanical artist William Brass (d. 1783).
