The Wild pineapple (Bromelia pinguin) belongs to Bromeliaceae (the Pineapple family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is distributed from Mexico to Central America, northern South America, and the West Indies. It grows in dry subtropical forests and high altitude cloud forests, and grows up to 1.8 m tall. It often forms dense colonies. The leaves are linear, with long, pointed tips and sharp radial spines at the edges, and are arranged in rosettes. In summer, it produces upright racemes of dark pink flowers with whitish bases and edges. The fruit is an ovate capsule that ripens to yellow. In Central and South America, it is planted as a pasture fence.
