The Brocchinia reducta belongs to Bromeliacea (the Pine apple family). It is an evergreen herb that is distributed from southern Venezuela in South America to Brazil, Colombia, and Guyana. It grows in the high mountainous regions of the Guiana Highlands at elevations of 1900 to 2800 m, reaching heights of 50 to 100 cm. This area features nutrient-poor, highly humid soils. The leaves are long and sword-shaped, yellow-green in color, overlapping to form a tube. Prey falls into the strongly acidic water pooled within, where it is broken down by symbiotic bacteria living in the liquid, and the nutrients are absorbed. Additionally, it possesses glandular hairs that secrete digestive fluids, apparently releasing a digestive enzyme called "phosphatase".
