ブナ科ブナ属の落葉高木で、学名は Fagus crenata。英名は Japanese beech。
The Japanese beech (Fagus crenata) belongs to Fagaceae (the Beech family). It is a tall deciduous tree that is distributed to all over Japan. It is a typical spices of deciduous broad-leaved forests, and the Japanese beech forests in the Shirakami-sanchi is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List. This tree can reach about 30 m in height. The barks are brayish brown and smooth. The leaves are ovate to diamond-ovate, alternate with wavy serration. It is monoecious. The flowers bloom as soon as foliation in May. The fruits are ovate, triquetrous and covered with cupules. They are a food of the animal which lives in woods. In the photo, 100th and 101th are individuals with "marcescence" that the dead leaves do not separate and remain on the branches.
