中国の東北部からモンゴルに分布しています。一属一種です。乾燥した黄土高原に生え、高さは８メートルほどになります。葉は奇数羽状複葉で、楕円形の小葉が９～１７個つきます。４月から５月ごろ、白色の花を咲かせます。花色は黄色からうす紅色へと変化します。果実は蒴果で、種子は黒褐色に熟します。種子から油を絞り、食用や石けんの原料に利用されます。

ムクロジ科ブンカンカ属の落葉小高木で、学名は Xanthoceras sorbifolium。英名は Yellowhorn。

The yellowhorn (Xanthoceras sorbifolium) belongs to Sapindaceae (the Soapberry family). It is a semi-tall deciduous tree that is native to northeastern China and Mongolia. It is the only species in the genus. This tree grows in the arid loess plateau, and can reach about 8 m in height. The leaves are impari-pinnate compound with 9-17, elliptic leaflets. The white flowers bloom from April to May. The flower-color turn yellow to pale rose pink. The fruits are capsules and the seed ripen blackish brown. An edible oil is obtained from the seed, and also used as an ingredient of soap.
