南アフリカが原産です。一属一種です。高さは1〜2メートルになり、葉は卵形で対生します。春、枝先の花序に朱赤色の筒状花を咲かせます。花弁の先端は浅く5裂し、黄色い柱頭が突き出ています。果実は茶褐色に熟します。 
アカネ科ブルケリア属の常緑小低木で、学名は Burchellia bubalina。英名は Buffalo wood、Wild pomegranate。 
The Buffalo wood (Burchellia bubalina) belongs to Rubiaceae (the Madder family). It is an evergreen shrub that is native to South Africa. It is the sole species in the genus. It grows 1-2 m tall. Its leaves are ovate and opposite. In spring, vermilion-red tubular flowers bloom in inflorescences at the ends of branches. The tips of the petals are shallowly 5 lobed with a protruding yellow stigma. The fruit ripens to a brownish-brown color.
