The Cat's ear (Hypochaeris radicata) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Europe. It was introduced into Japan in the early Showa Era (1926-1989). This herb grows in meadows, grasslands or roadsides, and can reach 50-80 cm in height. The leaves are oblanceolate, basal and covered with dense hairs. The slender flowering stalks are borne and bloom yellow flower-heads from June to September. The Japanese name is a literal translation of the French name "Salade de pore". It is also known as "Tanpopo-modoki" in Japan.
