The Mexican fire barrel (Ferocactus pilosus) belongs to Cactaceae (the Cactus family). It is a cylindrical cuctus that is found in the northeastern part of Mexico. It grows in deserts and dry shrub zones, and is 2 to 3 m tall and about 50 cm in diameter. It has 13 to 20 ribs, which are sharp in young specimens but become rounded as they mature, and there are no tuberculate. The spines are bright red, yellow or a mixture of the two. There are 6 to 12 central spines, which are thick and usually red, and are about 5 cm long. The radial spines are usually degenerate, and there are many white bristles or none at all. Yellow to red flowers about 2.5 cm in diameter bloom in a circle at the top of the stem. The fruit is an ovoid berry that ripens yellow.
