メキシコ北部のソノラ州から南部のオアハカ州に分布しています。高さは３〜９メートルになり、心形の葉が互生します。葉柄は長く、葉脈が赤みを帯びて目立ちます。幹の基部が肥大するため、多肉植物としても栽培されます。

クワ科イチジク属の常緑小高木で、学名は Ficus petiolaris。英名は Lava fig、Texcalamate。

The Lava fig (Ficus petiolaris) belongs to Moraceae (the Mulberry family). It is a semi-tall evergreen tree that is distributed from Sonora in northern Mexico to Oaxaca in the south. It grows 3 to 9 m tall, with heart-shaped leaves that grow in alternate arrangements. The petioles are long and the veins are reddish and conspicuous. It is also grown as a succulent plant because of its enlarged trunk base.
