オーストラリアのニューサウスウェールズ州からクイーンズランド州が原産です。現在では、熱帯地方に広く植栽されています。成長が早く、高さは１０〜３０メートルになります。樹皮は濃緑色がかっていて平滑です。葉は掌状に５〜７裂します。１２月から２月ごろ、大きな円錐花序をだし、ベル形の真っ赤な花を咲かせます。和名では「かえんじゅ（火焔樹）」と呼ばれます。

アオギリ科ブラキキトン属の半常緑高木で、学名は Brachychiton acerifolium。英名は Flame tree、Illawarra flame tree。

The flame tree (Brachychiton acerifolium) belongs to Sterculiaceae (the Sterculia family). It is a tall semi-evergreen tree that is native in New South Wales to Queensland of Australia. This tree is planted in tropical areas widely nowadays, growing fast and can reach 10-30 m in height. Barks are dark greenish and smooth. Leaves are devided into 5-7 palmately. Large panicles with bell-shaped bright red flowers are seen from December to February.
