The Carolina buckthorn (Frangula caroliniana) belongs to Rhamnaceae (the Buckthorn family). It is a deciduous small tree that is found in the southeastern to south-central United States and northeastern Mexico. It grows in forests, along river banks, and in lowlands, and grows 3 to 5 m tall. The leaves are ovate to elliptic, dark green, pointed at the tip, and entire. In late spring, inconspicuous pale yellow-green flowers bloom in the leaf axils. The fruit is a spherical drupe that ripens from red to black in late summer. The fruit is poisonous.
