The Hardy fuchsia (Fuchsia magellanica) belongs to Onagraceae (the Evening primrose family). It is a small evergreen tree that is distributed from Chile to Argentina in South America. It is the most cold-tolerant of the fuchsia genus and is used as a hedge in the British Isles, where some have become naturalized. It is a fast-growing, shrub-like tree, reaching a height of about 3 m. It produces red, drooping flowers with four lobed, recurved sepals and purple petals from summer to early winter. It is the mother plant of many garden varieties.
