わが国の本州、関東地方以西から四国・九州、それに台湾や中国、インドから地中海にまで分布する「だんちく」の変種または園芸品種です。稈は中空で節があり、高さは2〜4メートルになります。葉は長さ30〜60センチの線形で、緑色と白色の縦縞模様があります。牧野日本植物図鑑によれば、本種はヨーロッパ原産で明治12年ごろに導入されたといいます。別名で「ふいりせいようだんちく(斑入り西洋暖竹)」とも呼ばれます。 
イネ科ダンチク属の多年草で、学名は Arundo donax var. versicolor (syn. Arundo donax cv. Versicolor)。英名は Variegated giant reed。 
The Variegated giant reed (Arundo donax var. versicolor) belongs to Poaceae (the Grass family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is a variety or horticultural variety of "Giant reed" that is distributed from the Kanto region of Honshu westward to Shikoku and Kyushu in Japan, as well as Taiwan, China, India, and the Mediterranean Sea. The culms are hollow and jointed, and they grow to a height of 2 to 4 m. The leaves are linear in shape, 30 to 60 cm long, and have green and white vertical stripes. According to Makino's Japanese Plant Picture Book, this species is native to Europe and was introduced to Japan around 1879. It is also known by the name "Fuiri-seiyo-danchiku" (variegated western giant reed).
