わが国の本州、兵庫県以東から東北地方の太平洋側それに四国に分布しています。山地の日当たりのよいところに生え、高さは１〜２メートルになります。枝は４稜で翼があり、楕円形の葉が対生します。７月から８月ごろ、本年枝の先に穂状花序をだして、紅紫色の小さな花を咲かせます。花冠の外側には綿毛が生えています。サポニンを含む有毒植物です。

フジウツギ科フジウツギ属の落葉低木、学名は Buddleja japonica。英名は Japanese buddleja。

The Japanese buddleja (Buddleja japonica) belongs to Buddlejaceae (the Butterfly bush family). It is a small deciduous tree that is distributed westward from the Pacific Ocean side of Tohoku distrct to Kinki district of Honshu and Shikoku. This shrub grows in montane sunny places and can reach 1-2 m in height. The branches are quadrangular and winged. The leaves are elliptic and opposite. The spikes are borne on the new branches and bloom small mangeta flowers from July to August. The wooly hairs are borne on the outsided of corolla. The plant contains saponin and toxic.
