東南アジアや北アメリカそれにアフリカに広く分布しています。湿り気のある雑木林や荒れ地に生え、長さは３メートルほどになります。７月から８月ごろ、散房花序に小さな白い花を咲かせます。果実は膨らんで風船状になります。中にある種子は黒くて丸く、白いハート形の模様があります。

ムクロジ科フウセンカズラ属の蔓性多年草で、学名は Cardiospermum halicacabum。英名は Heart seed、Baloon vine。

The heart seed (Cardiospermum halicacabum) belongs to Sapindaceae (the Soapberry family). It is a perennial vine that is distributed widely to East-south Asia, North America and Africa. This vine grows in wettish brushes and barrens, and can reach about 3 m long. The small white flowers bloom in the corymbs from July to August. The fruits are capsules and inflated balloon-like. The seed is black, round and patterned with white heart-shaped.
