"Fuki-yukinoshita" (Saxifraga japonica) belongs to Saxifragaceae (the Saxifrage family). It is a perennial herb that is endemic to Japan, distributed from Hokkaido to the Japan Sea side of Honshu and Shikoku. This herb grows on montane to sub-alpine, streamside rocky places or screes, and can reach 15-80 cm in height. The leaves are round with cordate bases and irregular toothed edges. The panicles are borne on the flowering stalks and the small, white flowers bloom sparsely from July to August.
