It grows on the floor of evergreen forests and is 5 to 10 cm tall. The leaves are ovate to broadly ovate with a dull surface and are usually with cloudlike mottles. The calyx tube of the flower is slightly trapezoidal, and the upper part is sharply constricted. The calyx lobes are slightly open, about 1 cm long, with wavy edges and dark purple to dark brown interior. It has three pistils and six stamens, which is half the number of them of the common "wild ginger" (Asarum).
