台湾からフィリピンが原産です。幹は直立し、高さは２０メートルほどになります。長楕円形の葉は厚い革質で光沢があり、対生します。４月から６月ごろ、穂状花序に黄白色の花を咲かせます。果実はオレンジ色に熟し、「おおこうもり（大蝙蝠）」が食べるそうです。暴風にも耐えるため、沖縄では街路樹や生垣によく植栽されています。

オトギリソウ科フクギ属の常緑高木で、学名は Garcinia subelliptica。英名は Common garcinia。

The common garcinia (Garcinia subelliptica) belongs to the Clusiaceae family. It is a tall evergreen tree that is native to Taiwan and the Philippine Islands. The trunk is erect and can reach about 20 m in height. The leaves are oblong, thick leathery, glossy and arranged in opposite. The yellowish white flowers bloom in spikes from April to June. The fruits ripen orange and are eaten by megabat. This tree is stormproof and often planted as a roadside tree and hedgerows in Okinawa prefecture.
