わが国の本州から四国、九州に分布しています。山地の木陰に生え、高さは４０〜１００センチになります。葉は円心形で３〜７裂し、多くの腺毛があります。８月から９月ごろ、円錐花序に紫白色の花を咲かせます。花は俯き、長い雄しべが突きだしています。和名は、最初の発見地である三重県の福王山に因みます。

キク科フクオウソウ属の多年草で、学名は Prenanthes acerifolia。英名はありません。

The "Fukuo-so" (Prenanthes acerifolia) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu of Japan. This herb grows in mountainous tree-shaded areas, and it can reach 40-100 cm in height. The leaves are round-cordate, divided into 3-7 lobes and covered with many glandular hairs. The purple-white flowers bloom in panicles from August to September. The corolla is nodding and protrudes long stamens. The Japanese name is derived from the findspot; Mt. Fukuo that lies in Mie Prefecture.
