中国が原産です。桿は直径５センチ、高さは１０メートルほどになります。和名は、若い桿が青白色をした蝋質の粉に被われることから。このタケノコは食用になり、桿は釣り竿や竹細工に利用されます。中国名では「淡竹（dan zhu）」。

イネ科マダケ属の常緑タケ類で、学名は Phyllostachys glauca。英名はありません。

The "Funryoku-chiku" (Phyllostachys glauca) belongs to Poaceae (the Grass family). It is an evergreen bumboo that is native to China. The culm is 5 cm in diameter and grows up to 10 m tall. The Japanese name comes from the fact that the young culm is covered with a bluish-white waxy powder. The bamboo shoots are edible, and the culms are used to make fishing rods and bamboo crafts. The Chinese name is "淡竹" (dan zhu).
