中国の中部、青海省からチベット自治区に分布しています。「せいようおだまき（西洋苧環）」の近縁で、標高１８００〜３５００メートルの草原や潅木帯に生え、高さは２０〜４０センチになります。葉は２回３出複葉で、小葉は倒卵形をしています。晩春、上部の枝先や葉腋から花柄を伸ばして赤紫色の花を咲かせます。花冠は風鈴のように下向きで、距がないのが特徴です。中国語では「無距耧斗菜 wu ju lou dou cai 」と呼ばれます。

The Spurless columbine (Aquilegia ecalcarata) belongs to Ranunculaceae (the Buttercup family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed in central China, from Qinghai Province to Tibet Autonomous Region. It is a close relative of the "Columbine" and grows in grasslands and shrublands at elevations from 1800 to 3500 m and is 20 to 40 cm tall. The leaves are 2 times triternate compound, and the leaflets are obovate. In late spring, peduncles extend from the tips of the upper branches and leaf axils to produce reddish purple flowers. The corolla is downward like a wind chime and has no spur. In Chinese, it is called "無距耧斗菜" (dou cai wu ju lou dou cai).
