南アメリカの北部が原産です。多肉質のロゼットを形成して、高さは１．５メートルほどになります。「りゅうぜつらん」に似た植物で、堅くて長い披針形の葉にはわずかに鋸歯があります。寿命はたいへん長いものですが、花を咲かせると枯れてしまいます。強い芳香のある白い花が、６メートルほどもある花茎の先に咲きます。写真中３〜４・下は、斑入りの園芸品種「メディオピクタ（cv. Medio-picta）」。

リュウゼツラン科フルクラエア属の常緑多年草で、学名は Furcraea foetida。英名は Mauritius hemp。

The mauritius hemp (Furcraea foetida) belongs to Agavaceae (the Agave family). It is an evergree perennial that is native to northern South America. This is a carnous, rosette plant and can reach about 1.5 m in height. It is a similar to Agave, its leaves are rigid, long lanceolate with a few marginal prickles. Mauritius hemp is long-lived, but after blooming it may be blighted. Flowers are whitish, strongly fragrant and born on long stalks about 6 m in height. The 3rd to 5th photos are variegated cultivar 'Medio-picta'.
