わが国の各地をはじめ、北半球に広く分布しています。山野の腐植土や湿った岩などに生え、地下茎で広がります。「こうやのまんねんぐさ（高野の万年草）」に似ていますが、全体に小さく高さは５〜６センチほどで、二次茎（地上茎）の上部が弓状に曲がらないのが特徴です。

The Tree moss (Climacium dendroides) belongs to the family Climaciaceae. It is a bryophyte that is widely distributed throughout Japan and the Northern Hemisphere. It grows on humus and moist rocks in the mountains and spreads by underground stems. It is similar to "Koyano-mannen-gusa" (Climacium japonicum), but is smaller and about 5 to 6 cm tall, and the top of the secondary stem (above-ground stem) is not bent into an arch.
