"Fushiguro" (Silene firma) belongs to the Caryophyllaceae (the Carnation family). It is a biennial herb that is distributed throughout Japan, the Korean Peninsula, northeastern China, Amur and Ussuri region. This herb grows in lowland to mountane sunny places and up to a height of 30-100 cm. The stem is errect and its nodes are tinged dark purple. The leaves are lanceolate to ovate-lanceolate, opposite, with acute tips. The small white flowers bloom atop of stems and axils from June to September. The calyx lobes are ovate to long-ovate with ten veins.
