わが国の本州、岩手県以南から四国・九州、それに朝鮮半島に分布しています。低地から亜高山帯までの日当たりの良いところに生え、高さは５〜１０センチほどになります。卵形の葉は暗緑色で、裏面は紫色を帯びています。４月から５月ごろ、花茎を伸ばして、白い花を咲かせます。唇弁には紫色の筋が入ります。

スミレ科スミレ属の常緑多年草で、学名は Viola sieboldii。英名はありません。

"Fumoto-sumire" (Viola sieboldii) belongs to Violaceae (the Viola family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed southward from Iwate prefecture of Honshu south to Shikoku, Kyushu in Japan and the Korean Peninsula. This herb grows in sunny places, lowland to sub-alpine and can reach 5-10 cm in height. The leaves are ovate, dark green and the reverse sides are purplish. The white flowers come on the stalks from April to May. The lip has purplish stripes.
