太平洋のポリネシアが原産です。海岸や湿地に生え、高さは6〜9メートルほどになります。幹の下部は、支柱根となります。葉は長い剣状で、縁には乳白色の条斑が入ります。また葉は螺旋状につきます。果実や種子は食用になります。別名で「しまたこのき(縞蛸の木)」とも呼ばれます。 
タコノキ科タコノキ属の常緑低木で、学名は Pandanus veitchii。英名は Striped screw pine、Veitch screw pine。 
The Striped screw pine (Pandanus veitchii) belongs to Pandanaceae (the Screwpine family). It is a small evergreen tree that is native to Polynesia in the Pacific Ocean. It grows on beaches and marshes and grows 6 to 9 m tall. The lower part of the trunk is a prop root. The leaves are long and sword-shaped with milky white stripes on the edges. The leaves are attached in a spiral pattern. The fruits and seeds are edible. It is also called "Shima-takono-ki" (striped octopus tree) in Japan.
