The "Futaba-aoi" (Asarum caulescens) belongs to Aristolochiaceae (the Birthwort family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from Niigata and Fukushima prefectures of Honshu south to Shikoku and Kyushu in Japan. It grows in forests in mountainous areas and is 10-15 cm tall. The stems creep above the ground and produce two heart-shaped leaves at the end of the stem. The purple-brown flowers bloom from March to May. It is also called "Kamo-aoi" because it is used in the Aoi festival at Kamo Shrine in Kyoto, and is also famous as the family crest of the Tokugawa family.
