わが国の各地をはじめ、台湾や朝鮮半島、中国、ユーラシア大陸、北アメリカに広く布しています。池や沼地に群生し、高さは８０〜２００センチになります。茎は黄緑色の円筒形で、葉はふつう葉鞘だけです。７月から９月ごろ、茎の先端に不揃いな花序をだし、枝先に黄褐色の小穂をつけます。台湾華語では「莞」、中国語では「水葱（shui cong）」と呼ばれます。 |

カヤツリグサ科ホタルイ属の多年草で、学名は Scirpus tabernaemontani (syn. Schoenoplectus tabernaemontani)。英名は Softstem bulrush。 |

The Softstem bulrush (Scirpus tabernaemontani) belongs to Cyperaceae (the Sedge family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Japan, as well as Taiwan, the Korean Peninsula, China, Eurasian Continent and North America. This herb grows gregariously in ponds and swamps, and it can reach 80-200 cm in height. The stem is yellowish-green, cylindric and bears sheaths. The yellowish-brown spikelets are borne atop of irregular clustes from July to September. In Taiwanese Chinese, it is called "莞" and "水葱" (shui cong). |
