The Softstem bulrush (Scirpus tabernaemontani) belongs to Cyperaceae (the Sedge family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Japan, as well as Taiwan, the Korean Peninsula, China, Eurasian Continent and North America. This herb grows gregariously in ponds and swamps, and it can reach 80-200 cm in height. The stem is yellowish-green, cylindric and bears sheaths. The yellowish-brown spikelets are borne atop of irregular clustes from July to September. In Taiwanese Chinese, it is called "莞" and "水葱" (shui cong).
