ヨーロッパの南部が原産です。石灰岩地の土手などに生え、高さは６０〜１２０センチになります。葉はへら形で互生し、茎の下部にまとまってつきます。４月から６月ごろ、総状花序にベル形の紫色の花を咲かせます。園芸品種も多く、藤色や青色、ピンク色などの花色があります。
写真中７〜中８の品種は、「カップアンドソーサー（cv. Cup and Saucer）」、
中９・下は、「メイミックス（cv. May Mixed）」。

キキョウ科ホタルブクロ属の一年草から二年草で、学名は Campanula medium。英名は Canterbury bells。

The Canterbury bells (Campanula medium) belongs to Campanulaceae (the Bellflower family). It is an annual or biennial herb that is native to southern Europe. This herb grows in calcareous banks and can reach 60-120 cm in height. The leaves are spatulate, alternate and clustered at the underneath stems. The purple bell-shaped flowers bloom on the racemes from April to June. There are many cultivars that have riot of colors; lavender, blue and pink.
