わが国の四国・九州から台湾、中国に分布しています。「むくげ」や「ハイビスカス」と同じアオイ科の仲間です。短い毛が密生した大きな葉は、ふつう浅く5裂します。熱帯・亜熱帯地方では常緑ですが、温帯では冬に落葉します。6月から9月にかけて、淡いピンク色の花を咲かせます。朝に開いて、夕方には萎む一日花です。 
アオイ科フヨウ属の落葉低木で、学名は Hibiscus mutabilis。英名は Cotton rose hibiscus。 
The cotton rose hibiscus (Hibiscus mutabilis) belongs to Malvaceae (the Mallow family). It is a small deciduous tree that is native from Shikoku and Kyushu of Japan south to Taiwan and China. The leaves are large, usually quintuple-lobate shallowly and covered with dense short hairs. This tree are evergreen in the tropics and sub-tropics, though it loses its leaves in the winter in the temperate regions. The pale pink flowers bloom from June to September. The flowers last one day, and fade at evening.
