ヨーロッパから中央アジアのコーカサス地方に分布しています。高さは２０メートルほどになり、丸い樹冠を形成します。葉は卵形からハート形で、長さは５〜１０センチくらいです。夏に、芳香が強く小さな淡黄色の花を咲かせます。「せいようしなのき（西洋科の木）」は、本種と「なつぼだいじゅ（夏菩提樹）」との交雑種です。

シナノキ科シナノキ属の落葉高木で、学名は Tilia cordata。英名は Little-leaf linden、Small-leaved linden。

The Little-leaf linden (Tilia cordata) belongs to the Tiliaceae (the Linden family). It is a tall deciduos tree that is distributed from Europe to the Caucasus region of Central Asia. It grows to a height of about 20 m and forms a round canopy. The leaves are ovate to heart-shaped and 5 to 10 cm long. It produces small, fragrant, pale yellow flowers in summer. The "Lime tree" (Tilia europaea) is a hybrid of this species and the "Large-leaved lime" (Tilia platyphyllos).
