The Wushan fairy wings (Epimedium wushanense) belongs to Berberidaceae (the Barberry family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed in central-southern China. It grows in forests, thickets, and grasslands in mountainous areas and is 50 to 80 cm tall. The leaves are trifoliate, and the leaflets are lanceolate to narrowly lanceolate and leathery, with sharp serrations on the edges. The new leaves are bronze, but turn green in summer. Around April or May, the long flower scapes grow long and produce pale yellow flowers with spurs. The above-ground part is called "淫羊藿" (yin yang huo) in Chinese medicine, and is soaked in wine and used as a tonic and energy tonic. In Chinese, it is called "巫山淫羊藿" (wu shan yin yang huo).
