わが国の本州、福島県以南から四国・九州に分布しています。山地の日当たりの良い草地に生え、高さは１〜２メートルになります。全体にくも毛があり、茎は太くて紫褐色を帯びます。下部の葉は三角形で基部が鉾形にはりだし、上部の葉は卵状三角形です。１０月ごろ、茎の先に大きな頭花を咲かせます。葉場山とは草刈り場のある山のことです。

キク科ヤマボクチ属の多年草で、学名は Synurus excelsus。英名はありません。

The "Habayama-bokuchi" (Synurus excelsus) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed southward from Fukushima prefecture of Honshu to Shikoku and Kyushu. This herb grows in sunny montane grasslands and can reach 1-2 m in height. The plant is covered with spiderweb-like hairs and the stem is thick and tinged purplish-brown. The lower leaves are deltoid with hastate bases and the upper leaves are ovate-deltoid. The large flower-heads come in October. "Habayama" is a mountain where there is a place for cutting the grass.
