熱帯アメリカが原産です。海岸平野などに生え、高さは１〜１．８メートルになります。わが国へは江戸時代に中国から渡来しました。葉は偶数羽状複葉で互生し、小葉は４〜６対あります。７月から８月ごろ、上部の葉腋から花柄を伸ばし、黄色い蝶形花を咲かせます。果実は莢果で、種子は緩下剤や強壮剤、焙煎して波布茶の原料にされます。名前の由来は、毒蛇に咬まれたときに葉を揉んですり込むと効果があるという民間療法から。

ジャケツイバラ科カワラケツメイ属の多年草で、学名は Cassia occidentalis。英名は Coffee senna、Septicweed。

The coffee senna (Cassia occidentalis) belongs to the Caesalpiniaceae family. It is a perennial herb that is native to the tropical areas of America. This herb grows on coastal plains, and can reach 1-1.8 m in height. It was introduced into Japan in Edo period (about 250 years ago). The leaves are pari-pinnate compound, alternate with 4-6 paris of leaflets. The peduncles are borne on the upper axils, and the yellow papilionacenous flowers bloom July to August. The fruits are pods. The seeds are used for laxative or tonic medicine, and also used as a basic ingredient of herbal tea.
