わが国の本州から四国、九州それに中国に分布しています。山地の湿った林中に生え、高さは３０〜６０センチになります。全体にアルカロイドを含む毒草です。名前も「おにどころ」に似ていて、誤って食べると苦しんで走り回ることから。４月から６月ごろ、小さな暗紫色の花を咲かせます。

ナス科ハシリドコロ属の多年草で、学名は Scopolia japonica。英名はありません。

"Hashiri-dokoro" (Scopolia japonica) belongs to Solanaceae (the Nightshade family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed westward from Honshu to Shikoku, Kyushu and China. This herb grows in wettish montane woods, and can reach 30-60 cm in height. All parts of plants contain poisonous alkaloid. The purple-black flowers bloom from April to June.
