The "Hai-nezu" (Juniperus conferta) belongs to Cupressaceae (the Cypress family). It is a small evergreen tree that is distributed in various parts of Japan and also in Sakhalin. This tree grows in coastal dunes or rocks and the trunks are creeping on the ground. The leaves are needle-like and three whorled with acute tips. It is dioecious. It is borne yellowish-brown elliptic male-flowers or globous female-flowers from April to May. The fruits are strobiles and ripen in purplish-black in next year's fall.
