わが国の各地をはじめ、北半球の冷温帯に広く分布しています。広葉樹の枯れ木に群生します。子実体の傘は扇形から半円形、腎形で、幅１〜６センチ、厚さ１〜３センチになります。傘の背面は灰白色から淡褐色で、微毛を密生し、環紋があります。食用には不向きです。

The violet toothed polypore (Trichaptum biform) belongs to the Polyporaceae family. It is an annual fungus that is distributed all over Japan and widely in the cool temperate area of Northern Hemispher. This fungus grows gregariously on deadwood of broad leaf tree. The cap of carpophore is fan-like to hemicycle, reniform, 1-6 cm in width and 1-3 cm thick. The back surface of cap is gray-white to pale brown, fuzzy and ring-streaked. This fungus is uneatable.
