The Cocks-egg (Salpichroa origanifolia) belongs to Solanaceae (the Nightshade family). It is a perennial herb that is native to South America. It was introduced in Koishikawa Botanical Garden which located in Tokyo around the middle days of Meiji Era (1868-1912). It also escaped from cultivation and nowaday it is naturalized from westward Kanto district to Chugoku district of Honshu. This herb grows on roadsides and waste places, the stems are trailing and they can reach several meters. The leaves are alternate, broad elliptic to ovate with short petioles. The small white flowers bloom descending from spring to fall. The corolas are vase-shaped with five partite tips. The fruits are berry and ripen yellow to white.
