中国の北東部と中部が原産です。山地に生え、高さは１５〜２５メートルになります。中国では神聖な木とされ、王宮や墳墓、寺院などに植栽されています。樹皮は平滑で灰緑色、円形の鱗片に落ちて、淡黄色の斑が現れます。この斑は日光に晒されると、オリーブ色から赤色、紫色に変化します。葉は３個ずつつきます。４月から５月ごろ、淡黄緑色の花を咲かせます。球果は翌年の１０月ごろに熟します。別名で、「しろまつ（白松）」とか「さんこのまつ（三鈷の松）」と呼ばれます。中国語では「白皮松（bai pi song）」です。

The Lacebark pine (Pinus bungeana) belongs to Pinaceae (the Pine family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is native to northeastern and central China. This tree grows in mountains and can reach 15-25 m in height. It has been regarded as a sacred tree and is often planting in courts, graves and temples. The bark is smooth, gray-green and sheds in round scales to reveal patches of pale yellow, which turn olive-brown, red and purple on exposure to light. The leaves are linear and three per bundle. The pale yellowish-green flowers bloom from April to May. The fruits are strobiles and ripen in next year's October. It is called "白皮松" (bai pi song) in Chinese.
