中国の中部、四川省が原産です。桿は直径２．５センチ、高さは５〜７メートルになります。桿の色は林の中では濃緑色ですが、直射日光に晒されると明るい黄色に変わります。最も耐寒性のある種で、氷点下２６度でも生き続けます。早春にタケノコをだします。中国名では「蓉城竹（rong cheng zhu）」。

イネ科マダケ属の常緑タケ類で、学名は Phyllostachys bissetii。英名はありません。

"Hakukyo-chiku" (Phyllostachys bissetii) belongs to Poaceae (the Grass family). It is an evergreen bumboo that is native to central China, Sichuan Province. The culms are 2.5 cm in diameter and grow 5 to 7 m tall. The color of the culms is dark green in the forest, but turns bright yellow when exposed to direct sunlight. It is the most cold tolerant species, surviving temperatures as low as 26 degrees below zero. It produces bamboo shoots in early spring. Its Chinese name is "蓉城竹" (rong cheng zhu).
