わが国の各地をはじめ、朝鮮半島や中国に分布しています。湿潤な谷間に多く生え、高さは６〜１５メートルになります。名前は、花がいっぱい咲いた姿が白い雲のように見えることから。大きな葉は倒卵形で縁には歯牙状の鋸歯があり、互生します。５月から６月ごろ、枝先に「えごのき」に似た小さな白い花を下垂させます。材は、器具や彫刻材などに使われます。中国語では「玉鈴花（yu ling hua）」と呼ばれます。 |

エゴノキ科エゴノキ属の落葉小高木で、学名は Styrax obassia。英名は Fragrant snowbell。 |

The Fragrant snowbell (Styrax obassia) belongs to the family Styracaceae. It is a semi-tall deciduous tree that is native to Japan, the Korean Peninsula and China. This tree grows in waste mountane dales and can reach 6-15 m in height. The leaves are large obovate and alternate with odontophyllus toothed edges. The drooping clusters are borne at the terminal branches and bloom small white flowers from May to June. The timbers are used for furniture or carving. In Chinese, it is called "玉鈴花" (yu ling hua). |
