わが国の本州、静岡県以西から、四国・九州に分布しています。海岸の砂地に生え、高さは２０〜６０センチほどになります。茎は下部から分枝し、厚い葉には鋭い棘と強い光沢があります。６月から１２月ごろ、茎先に直立して紅紫色の頭花を咲かせます。１〜４個の苞葉があります。根は香味があって食用になり、「はまごぼう（浜牛蒡）」とも呼ばれます。 |

キク科アザミ属の多年草で、学名は Cirsium maritimum。英名はありません。 |

The "Hama-azami" (Cirsium maritimum) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed westward from Shizuoka prefecture of Honshu to Shikoku and Kyushu. This herb grows on sandy shores and can reach 20-60 cm in height. The stem is branched at lower parts. The leaves are thick, strong glossy with acute spines. The magenta flower-heads bloom upright on terminal stems with 1-4 leafy bracts from June to December. The rootstocks have flavor and are used for foods. |
