The Formosan stonecrop (Sedum formosanum) belongs to Crassulaceae (the Orpine family). It is a perennial evergreen herb that is found from southern Kyushu to the Nansei Islands in Japan, as well as in Taiwan and on Batang Island in the Philippines. It grows on rocky shores near the coast and reaches a height of 10 to 20 cm. The stems are fleshy and reddish, branching into three at the base one or two times. The leaves are spoon-shaped to broadly obovate, yellow-green, and alternate. From around April to June, it extends a flower stalk to produce a corymb, blooming with yellow five-petaled flowers. In Taiwanese Chinese, it is called "台灣佛甲草".
