The Beach pearlwort (Sagina maxima) belongs to Caryophyllaceae (the Carnation family). It is an annual or a perennial herb that is distributed throughout Japan and also grows in Taiwan, the Korean Peninsula, China, the Russian Far East, the Aleutian Islands and the western United States. This herb grows in coastal dunes or screes and can reach 5-20 cm in height. It resembles to the Japanese pearlwort (Sagina japonica), thought it is defined by succulent thick stems and leaves. The small white flowers are in flower from May to August. The flowers are not notched and have five styles. The fruits are capsules and splitting open when mature. In Taiwanese, it is called "大瓜槌草", and in Chinese, "根葉漆姑草" (gen ye qi gu cao).
