わが国の各地をはじめ、朝鮮半島や中国東北部に分布しています。海岸の砂地に生え、高さは１０〜５０センチになります。根は太く、茎は下部からよく分枝します。葉は１回羽状複葉で、小葉は羽状に切れ込みます。８月から１０月ごろ、枝先に複散形花序をだし、小さな白色の花を咲かせます。果実は扁球形で、隆起線が目立ちます。別名で、「はまにんじん（浜人参）」とも呼ばれます。

セリ科ハマゼリ属の二年草で、学名は Cnidium japonicum。英名はありません。

"Hama-zeri" (Cnidium japonicum) belongs to Apiaceae (the Carrot family). It is a biennial herb that is native to Japan, the Korean Peninsula and northeastern China. This herb grows in sandy soils on the beaches and can reach 10-50 cm in height. The root is thick and the stem is much branched at the bottom. The leaves are pinnate compound and the leaflets are divided into lobes pinnately. The compound umbels are borne on the branches and bloom small white flowers from August to October. The fruits are compressed ovate with distinct costae.
