中国、長江以南の中東部が原産です。桿は直径４センチ、高さは１０メートルほどになります。桿の節が大きいのが特徴です。タケノコは美味しく、食用には最も適した品種だと考えられています。中国の文献では、本種は「こうちく（篌竹）」で、「はなだけ（花竹）」はその一品種（Phyllostachys nidularia f. glabro-vagina）とされています。

イネ科マダケ属の常緑タケ類で、学名は Phyllostachys nidularia。英名は Big-node bamboo、Broom bamboo。

The Big-node bamboo (Phyllostachys nidularia) blongs to Poaceae (the Grass family). It is an evergreen bumboo that is native to central-eastern China south of the Yangtze River. The rod is 4 cm in diameter and grows to a height of about 10 m. It is characterized by the large node on the rod. The bamboo shoots are delicious and are considered the most suitable species for food. According to Chinese literature, this species is called "篌竹" and "花竹" is one of its varieties (Phyllostachys nidularia f. glabro-vagina).
