わが国の四国南部と九州南部に分布しています。山地に生え、高さは２０メートルほどになります。樹皮は暗灰色で、浅いひび割れがあります。葉は狭披針形で、やや厚い革質です。葉の長さは７〜１５センチあり、先端は細く尖ります。雌雄同株です。４月から５月ごろ、新枝の上部に雌花を屹立し、新枝の下部から雄花の花穂を下垂させます。果実は堅果で、翌年の１０月から１１月ごろに熟します。

ブナ科コナラ属の常緑高木で、学名は Quercus hondae (syn. Cyclobalanopsis hondae)。英名はありません。

The "Hanaga-gashi" (Quercus hondae) belongs to Fagaceae (the Beech family). It is a tall evergreen tree that is distributed in southern Shikoku and southern Kyushu in Japan. It grows in mountainous areas and grows to a height of about 20 m. The bark is dark gray with shallow cracks. The leaves are narrowly lanceolate and rather thickly leathery. The leaves are 7 to 15 cm long with narrowly pointed tips. The plant is monoecious, with female flowers that rise high at the top of new branches from April to May, and male spikes that droop from the lower part of the new branches. The fruits are nuts, which ripen around October or November of the following year.
