The northern catalpa (Catalpa speciosa) belongs to Bignoniaceae (the Trumpet creeper family). It is a tall decidouos tree that is native to the midwestern United States. This tree grows in moist valley soils by streams, and can reach 15-24 m in height. The leaves are cordate, entire margins, and arranged in whorled or opposite. It is a monoecious. The flowers are white with yellow and purple spots on insides, bell shaped, appear in upright terminal clusters in late spring. The fruits are long, dark brown capsules, and mature in fall.
