メキシコ中部のケレタロ州とイダルゴ州に分布しています。ふつうは８稜をもつ柱サボテンで、高さ１．２メートル、直径１５センチほどになります。棘は黄褐色で５〜１１個が集まっています。夏に、直径６センチほどの淡黄色の花を咲かせます。花には芳香があります。

サボテン科アストロフィツム属の柱サボテンで、学名は Astrophytum ornatum。英名は Monk's hood。

The monk's hood (Astrophytum ornatum) belongs to Cactaceae (the Cactus family). It is a columnar cactus that is native to Queretaro and Hidalgo state of central Mexico. This cactus is columnar with usually 8 ridges, and grows to 1.2 m tall and 15 cm across. The spines are yello-brown and arranged usually 5-11 per areole. The pale yellow flowers, about 6 cm across, bloom in summer. They are scented.
