わが国の固有種で、長野県の八方尾根に分布しています。高山帯にある蛇紋岩地の草地に生え、高さは４０〜７０センチになります。葉は卵形披針形で羽状に深裂し、羽片は５〜９対あります。８月から１０月ごろ、鮮やかな紅紫色の頭花を咲かせます。総苞は広鐘形から鐘形で少し粘り、総苞片は６〜７列あり斜上から反曲します。果実は暗褐色の痩果です。

キク科アザミ属の多年草で、学名は Cirsium happoense。英名は Happo thistle。

The Happo thistle (Cirsium happoense) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is endemic to Japan and distributed to the Happoone (Happo Ridge) in Nagano Prefecture. This herb grows in alpine grasslands on serpentine soils and can reach 40-70 cm in height. The leaves are ovate-lanceolate and divided deep pinnately with 5-7 pairs of pinnae. The bright magenta flower-heads bloom from August to October. The involucres are broad bell-shaped to bell-shaped and somewhat sticky, and the involucral segments are arranged in 6-7 rows and ascending to recurved. The fruits are dark brown achenes.
